Teaching Experience
1998: Niijima Glass Art Center, International Glass Art Festival, Niijima, Japan: Instructor in creative glass
1997,98: Pratt Fine Arts Center, Seattle, Washington: Instructor in creative glass
1994,96: Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington: Faculty member in creative glass
1985-96: Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland: Faculty member and teacher of fine arts and architecture
Trained in fine arts, now recognized as a sculptor of glass, I am not interested in glass per se. It is only one medium that conveys my thoughts, embodies my visions. I work with space, time, light. Sometimes I do collages, photography, film. Sometimes I design small sculptural forms like jewelry. The latter I like passionately.
Sometimes I write. Sometimes I design interiors—just for my proper, artistic hygiene.
I believe that architecture is a crown for art, sound and silence, light and dark, not mere brick and steel. Architecture and art are strongly connected: Fine arts do not decorate architecture; architecture is not a shell for fine arts. They are an integral part of each other, and this relationship interests me, as do monumental forms. I develop my thoughts via a unique technique known as Anna Skibska Technique. I have developed the technique and it serves me well: I like to wrap space, embrace time, and trap light, working on them simultaneously from the same beginning.
Bio
Anna Skibska studied at the Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland, in the Department of Painting, diploma awarded in 1984 (Polish Minister of Culture and Art Award in the presentation of Art Academy’s Best Diplomas at the exhibition, Diploma ‘84, Museum of Architecture, Wroclaw, Poland). From 1985 to 1996 Skibska was a faculty member and teacher of fine arts and architecture at Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland. In 1990 she presented her work (with financial success) at the OB’Art 5e Salon de L’Objet D’Art Contemporain at Porte de Versailles in Paris, France (catalogue printed). Her signature technique, known as Anna Skibska Technique was developed in the first half of the 90s. In 1992, she was the youngest artist invited to the National Museum in Wroclaw for an individual exhibition (catalogue printed). She moved to the USA in the late 90s, and has since resided and created in Seattle, Washington. In 2001, she had a solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum, and in 2002 she was invited to present her work at Fondacione Bevilaqua la Masa in Venice (catalogue printed). In 2004, the flameworking studio in Pratt Fine Arts Center (Seattle, Washington) was officially named the Anna Skibska Flameworking Studio. She participated with financial success in 11e Pavillon des Arts et du Design, Jarden des Tuileries, Paris in 2007 (catalogue printed). The same year, Skibska participated in Basel/Miami Design, where her exhibition was purchased by Musee-Atelier du Verre, Sars-Poteries, France. In his 2013 book, Spark the Creative Flame, P. Stankard devoted a chapter, “Sparkle of the soul,” to Skibska’s achievements and her technique. In the same year, she presented her work at the Museo del Vetro in Murano, Venice, coinciding with the Venice Biennale (catalogue printed). In 2014, she was awarded the Honeycomb Award in Poland.
